Meet the Host:

LijIE ZHANG

Lijie Zhang is a pop-up book designer and independent illustrator based in London. After graduation, she worked at Genglin Children’s Book House and Postwave Publishing Company. During her editorial career, she editing of the original picture book Journey of a Lotus Seed and contributed to the research and development of a group of people who were interested in the history of pop-up books and made several pop-up cards workshops in Beijing . She also participated in the exhibition design for pop-up book fairs in many cities. 

Since 2018, she moved to London with family , where she has published interactive pop-up books ‘Yummy!Yummy!’ ‘My favorite Chinese Food’and ‘Treasure Chest’. Recently , she has hosted numerous pop-up card crafting workshops in cities including London, Cambridge, and Reading. She is currently working on a pop-up book project depicting the architectural landscape of East London named Here is E20 East Bank.

1. What is the suitable age range for this workshop?

This workshop is designed for children aged 6 to 12 years old. The activities and materials are tailored for this age group, ensuring younger kids can enjoy the process while older children dive deeper into character creation and storytelling.

 

2. Will parents or guardians be allowed to stay with their children?

Yes! Parents or guardians are welcome to stay during the workshop if they wish. However, it’s not mandatory. Our experienced workshop team, along with Jo Rooks, will ensure your child feels comfortable, engaged, and supported throughout the event. If you decide to stay, we kindly ask that you let your child enjoy the creative process independently, with minimal interruptions.

 

3. Do participants need to bring anything?

No, we’ve got everything covered! All materials, including sketchpads, pencils, colors, paints, and collage materials, will be provided. If your child has a favorite set of tools or a specific material they’d like to incorporate, they are welcome to bring it along!

 

4. Does my child need prior illustration or story-writing experience?

Not at all! This workshop is designed for all skill levels, whether your child loves to doodle or is just starting to explore creativity. Jo Rooks will guide participants step-by-step through the process, ensuring everyone has fun while learning.

 

5. Can my child dress up as their character after creating it?

Absolutely! While we’ll focus on creating the character and discussing costumes during the workshop, kids will be encouraged to imagine themselves as their character. If time permits, they might even make a simple DIY costume accessory to take home. Parents are encouraged to help their child fully dress up as their character for World Book Day celebrations.
